Los Cuentos Infantiles
For the 'Los Cuentos Infantiles' project, each student was tasked with creating a children's book with relevant social content from a specific spanish speaking country. In the beginning of the project, we began by completing research forms on our country, which taught us the basic information pertaining to our country such as geography, culture, and climate. Further on, we dug even further into our chosen country by taking a deeper look at a specific city within our country. After we had completed the research forms for our countries and cities, we refined this information and drew out as many details as we could that would help us craft our story. Following the research process, each student was given a book and we went to work outlining our stories and art for the project. We spent a period of time writing the story, and each student conferenced with Dave to double check for any errors in our writing. For another week or so, we spent time outlining our drawings or perfecting our methods of art for our book. When these pieces had been completed, we fused them together with the polished writing and emerged with an effective and fun children's book. We then took our books to Needham Elementary School and read our stories to 1st graders, who enjoyed the stories just as much as we enjoyed reading them.
I think that my favorite part of this project was reading my story to the Elementary schoolers. This part of the project was special for me because I was able to share my work for eager students of a younger age, and I hope that I was able to convey a sense of joy and excitement to the students that listened to my story. From this project I learned that there is plenty of information that goes into building a chilrend's book. Because I had never written a children's book before, I was surprised at how much time and energy it took to develop a fully refined book. After completing the research, writing, and drawing portions of the project, however, I discovered that there are multiple aspects that play into a successful children's story. In addition to this discovery, I was also able to learn heaps of information about my chosen country, Panama, which was a unique and beneficial experience for me. If I was to do this project over again, I would focus/add more attention to the cultural aspects of Panama, and not focus so much on the "exterior" of Panama if you will. Overall, I feel that this project was very successful for me.
